Hello, I’m Dr. Bonano!
I specialize in hip and knee replacement surgery. Hip and knee arthroplasty are highly technical surgeries that require a level of discipline that resonates with my experience as a college athlete. I have also seen first-hand the significant impact that joint replacements can have on a patient’s life and I am motivated by the lifelong pursuit of improving patient outcomes.
As a field goal kicker for the University of Arizona, I have been in high pressure situations where the game was on the line, and not only were my teammates counting on me, but tens of thousands of fans were counting on me to make the kick, as well. In my last college football game, the 2012 New Mexico Bowl, my team had mounted an improbable comeback, scoring two touchdowns in the final two minutes to tie the game with 19 seconds left on the clock. When I ran out from the sidelines to kick the game-winning extra point, I remember feeling surprisingly calm. I knew that all of my hard work and thousands of hours of practice had prepared me for this moment. There is no doubt that the discipline and commitment to mastery I developed as a Division I kicker have prepared me for a career in adult reconstructive surgery. Arthroplasty, like kicking, is a highly specialized field that requires repetition and unwavering attention to detail in order to avoid mistakes and achieve a successful outcome. The technical steps of each hip and knee reconstruction are reproducible and I am inspired by the idea of creating a routine in the operating room, practicing it daily, and becoming a master at it. In addition, as a kicker I also learned that no matter how prepared I was, I would not have been able to do my job without my teammates blocking for me or my holder placing the ball in the exact right position. Joint replacement surgery similarly relies on teamwork in order to achieve the best outcomes. I work closely with anesthesiologists, physician assistants, nurses, therapists, and case managers to provide a multi-centered approach to patient care.
The most rewarding aspect of adult reconstruction is the meaningful impact it has on patient’s lives. Patients who undergo hip and knee arthroplasty often are in extreme pain and severely limited in their mobility and daily activities. I saw this first-hand with my mother who recently had bilateral knee replacements. Prior to her surgery, she could not walk more than a few blocks and had a severe limp that was hard for me to see. She now tells me that her new knees have given her life back and she is excited that I will be able to provide this same gift to my patients. Her experience has provided me with a deep sense of compassion that I bring with me into each patient interaction and inspired me to dedicate my life to developing the skills and knowledge necessary to help others in the same way. I am committed to becoming the best version of myself and providing the best outcomes to my patients.
